Service Description: <DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><P><SPAN>A conservation easement restricts the use or development of real property for the following reasons: -Retaining or protecting natural or open-space values of the property;-Assuring its availability for agricultural, forestal, recreational, or open-space use;-Protecting natural resources;-Maintaining or enhancing air or water quality; or-Preserving the historical, architectural or archeological aspects of the propertyA landowner may convey such an easement to a public body or a qualified private conservationorganization. In Virginia, public bodies may accept these types of easements under the OpenSpace Land Act, Va. Code § 10.1-1700 et seq. Qualifying private land trusts operate under theConservation Easement Act, Va. Code § 10.1-1009 et seq.While this data will be updated as needed, it may not contain recently recorded easements. There are over 65,000 (I think this is the most current number, but it may be more than that) acres of land with permanent conservation easements within the County.
